LAOS. TWO PEOPLE SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR DRUG TRAFFICKING
July 13, 2005: Laos, which is not believed to have carried out an execution for more than a decade, passed death sentences on two drug traffickers, the official KPL news agency said.
The two men, aged 45 and 30, were sentenced the previous week at the people's court in Vientiane, the agency said on its website. They had been arrested on August 15, 2003 with 18 bags of amphetamines containing 36,000 pills weighing 3.6 kilograms. Amnesty International said in its 2005 annual report that no executions were known to have been carried out in Laos for more than 11 years. (Sources: Agence France Presse, 13/07/2005)
