UGANDA. ARMY COURT SENTENCES TO DEATH MUSEVENI GUARD
April 24, 2006: following a three day trial, the Bombo-based Division Court Martial (DCM), Uganda, sentenced to death Lance Corporal Charles Ssekamatte, a soldier attached to President Yoweri Museveni's security detail, for the murder of a civilian in Sembabule District.
The court, which ordinarily sits at the Army Headquarters in the Bombo Barracks, conducted the trial following a Uganda People's Defence Force directive that the soldier be tried where he committed the offence.
L/Cpl Ssekamatte was found guilty of killing Kaggwa Mugerwa Gonzaga of Kisozi.
"After court deliberations basing on the presentations from nine prosecution witnesses and the defence, court agreed with the overwhelming evidence that RA/88309 L/Cpl Charles Ssekamatte on September 24, 2005 at around 6p.m. at Kisozi Trading Centre in Sembabule with malice aforethought killed Kaggwa Mugerwa Gonzaga by shooting.
"The Court therefore convicts and sentences the accused to death," said the Bombo DCM chairman, Col. Geoffrey Taban. The decision attracted loud applause from the civilians who attended the trial with some of them immediately shouting: "Afe (let him die)". (Sources: The Monitor (Kampala), 24/04/2006)
