PAKISTAN’S FIRST EXECUTION OF THE YEAR 2007
January 9, 2007: the first execution of 2007 was carried out in Faisalabad jail where a condemned prisoner Waheed Iqbal, 40, was hanged. He was resident of Lahore and involved in murder case. The Anti Terrorism Court had sentenced him to death in 1998 for killing a youth in 1996 and his appeals were rejected by the High and Supreme Courts upholding the judgement of the lower court. His appeal was also rejected by the President of Pakistan in July 2006, however his parents were granted an interim injunction for reconciliation with the aggrieved party. The body was handed over to his relatives on the same morning when a medical officer confirmed his death. (Sources: Pakistan Press International Information Services, 09/01/2007)
