IRANIAN COURT DROPS DEATH SENTENCE AGAINST TEEN
January 15, 2007: an Iranian court dropped a death sentence against a teenager convicted of stabbing to death one of three men who allegedly tried to rape her and a 16-year-old niece. Nazanin Fatehi, who was 17 at the time, was in a park outside Tehran with her niece and their boyfriends when they were approached by the three men. The boys fled after the men pushed the girls to the ground, and Fatehi drew a knife and stabbed them. "Five judges reviewed her case, and all of them admitted that what Fatehi did was only self-defense," said lawyer Mohammad Mostafaei. Mostafaei expected the court would sentence Fatehi - in accordance with Islamic law - to pay blood money to the family of the man. (Sources: AP, 15/01/2007)
