ST KITTS COMMITS TO DEATH PENALTY
September 2, 2008: St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr Denzil Douglas says his government is committed to carrying out the death penalty as long as it remains on the country's law books.
The Prime Minister, who is also Minister of National Security, made the assertion on the heels of a recent case in which an attempt to carry out death sentences on four persons was thwarted when lawyers for the condemned men filed to stay the executions.
Following an emergency meeting of the Mercy Committee, the recommendation to carry out the sentence of death was made to the Governor General. Â
However, the Prime Minister said he was later informed that the men's attorneys had filed the necessary appeals. There are seven persons on death row in St. Kitts and Nevis. (Sources: Radio Jamaica, 02/09/2008)
