UN CALL TO END EXECUTIONS WILL NOT AFFECT AFGHAN LEADER'S DECISION: OFFICIAL
November 12, 2008: responding to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights demand to an end to hangings in Afghanistan, Sadeq Modaber, the head of the Presidential Office for Administrative Affairs said on television that "At a time when abductions, violence and activities of terrorist groups are on the rise, it is necessary to enforce hanging verdictsâ.
âThe president of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan studies the situation and observes people's demands. I think the remarks by a UN official will not very much affect the president's decision.â (Sources: BBC, 12/11/2008)
