NIGERIA: MINISTER SEEKS TO RELEASE PRISONERS ON DEATH ROW TO DECONGEST PRISONS
May 22, 2009: as part of measures to decongest the nation's prisons, the Nigerian government was urged to release the 87 inmates currently on the death row that are 60 years old and over. The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa, made the suggestion at the meeting of the Body of Attorneys in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State Capital. He also recommended to the Attorneys-General of the various states to take similar steps and initiatives aimed at further decongesting the prisons and advancing the human rights of the citizens.
