UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: DEATH PENALTY FOR DESERT RAPE
April 27, 2011: in the United Arab Emirates, the Supreme Court confirmed the death penalty of a man who offered a woman a ride in his truck near the Omani border on January 5, 2010, before raping her and abandoning her in the desert.
The decision was based on forensic tests and the man's confessions.
The ruling did not identify the offender or the victim.
The Fujairah Criminal Court of First Instance found him guilty of kidnap and rape, and sentenced him on May 9, 2010. The Appeals Court upheld the verdict. (Sources: The National, 28/04/2011)
