INDIA: MAN GETS DEATH SENTENCE FOR RAPE AND MURDER OF SCHOOLGIRL
March 1, 2012: A court in West Bengal, India, awarded death sentence to a man convicted of rape and murder of a school girl in Burdwan district.
Additional Sessions judge Somnath Bandyopadhyay ordered capital punishment for the convict Binay Bagdi for raping and strangling the 14-year-old to death on April 21, 2011.
The court also slapped a fine of Rs. 2,000 on 34-year old Bagdi, to be realised before the execution of the death sentence.
According to the prosecution, the 14-year old had left her house to watch TV at her neighbour's house but was lured by Binay on the pretext of giving chocolate. He then raped and murdered her at a secluded spot not far from her house.
Binay was arrested after her decomposed body was found on May 3 as he was last seen speaking with the girl. He had later confessed to the crimes. (Source: Press Trust of India, 02/03/2012 via NDTV)
