INDIA: DEATH SENTENCE FOR RAPIST, MURDERER OF TEENAGED GIRL
January 10, 2013: A court in Rajasthan's Sriganganagar town, India, sentenced to death a man for raping and then brutally killing a 15-year-old girl, a lawyer said.
The special court for atrocities on women and dowry harassment cases handed out capital punishment to 27-year-old Sohan Lal alias Sonu, a resident of Sadulshahar in Sriganganagar district, some 500 km from Jaipur.
Presiding judge Dharamdutt Sharma, while handing out the capital punishment for murder, described the crime as a rarest of the rare case.
"Sohan Lal who worked as a labourer in a grain market in Sadulshahar had raped the sister of his best friend on May 17, 2010," public prosecutor Paramjeet Kaur told IANS.
Sohan Lal had taken the girl to his rented accommodation and then raped her, she added.
"When the girl said that she would tell her family members about the rape, he used an axe to hack her. She was attacked on her face and other body parts. The police later arrested Sohan Lal and booked him under Section 302 (murder) and 376 (rape) of Indian Penal Code," she said. (Sources: IANS, 10/01/2013)
