INDIA: FIFTH BIHAR RAPIST, MURDERER GETS DEATH
February 6, 2013: A man who raped and murdered a minor girl four years ago was sentenced to death by a fast track court in Vaishali district of north Bihar, India.
The court of additional district and session judge (ADJ)-VI, Padma Kumari Choudhary awarded capital punishment to Bilat Pandit for the May 2008 rape and murder.
Pandit became the fifth rape and murder convict in Bihar to be awarded death sentence since the day the JS Verma committee came out with its report recommending more stringent punishment in such cases.
One such convict was awarded capital punishment by a Darbhanga (north Bihar) court on January 23. Two more persons were handed out the same punishment by a court in Muzaffarpur (also north Bihar), on January 30.
Thereafter, Sanjay Rishi was sentenced to death by a Katihar court on February 2 in a record nine days since he raped and killed his four-year-old niece.
According to police sources, Pandit had lured a girl from a family he was working for as a house servant to a feast in Hajpur town in Vaishali. He then raped and murdered her at a secluded place.
The victim's body was found at an isolated spot in the Veer Kuer Singh colony under Hajipur Town PS, on the following day. Pandit was arrested on the victim's father's complaint.
Police investigation found him guilty of the heinous crime.
Pandit has been in jail since the day of recovery of body of victim in May 2008. (Sources: Hindustan Times, 07/02/2013)
