BANGLADESH: 1071 PRISONERS ON DEATH ROW
June 8, 2014: A total of 1071 inmates are on death row in jails across the country, State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan said.
Asduzzaman was replying to a tabled question from Morshed Alam, MP (Noakhali-2) in the parliament.
Currently, the jails are holding 66,465 prisoners, including 19,713 sentenced to various jail terms.
There are 45,593 under-trial prisoners, he said.
The government spends Tk 36.46 lakh on food for the prisoners daily Asaduzzaman said.
Answering to a question of Nurul Islam Sujan MP (Panchagar-2), the state minister said the government plans to raise police manpower by 50,000 to maintain law and order. (Sources: Thereport24.com, 08/06/2014)
