UAE: WIDOW SPARES HUSBAND’S KILLER DEATH SENTENCE
December 23, 2014: The widow of a murdered security guard spared the killer the death sentence at the Abu Dhabi Court of Appeal.
S Z, from Pakistan, worked as a labourer at the company the victim worked for.
The widow, also from Pakistan, and her 23-year-old son are the victim’s only heirs.
Under UAE law, they have the right to decide on the fate of the killer.
“Do you choose to seen a death sentence, or blood money or you will pardon the defendant?” asked the judge.
She said she wanted to pardon him, but she had young children so asked if she could receive some financial aid for them.
“There is no such option as a little something for the children. You either decide to take the blood money, Dh200,000, or request a death sentence or you pardon him altogether.”
She said she will pardon him in that case, because they want the victim to be pardoned by Allah and to rest in heaven, adding that her visa will expire in one month and she needed to go home. “I will give you an adjournment anyway. Consult your adult sons again,” the judge said.
The case was adjourned until December 31. (Sources: thenational.ae, 23/12/2014)
