EGYPT: 8 BROTHERHOOD MEMBERS SENTENCED TO DEATH
September 15, 2015: Egypt's Minya Criminal Court handed down a death sentence in absentia to eight members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and sentenced 83 others to life in prison on charges including rioting, MENA reported.
The death sentence has been approved by Egypt's Grand Mufti Shawky Allam.
The total number of people convicted in the case was 119 members of the Brotherhood accused of setting fire to a police station in Minya's Samalut, stealing weapons and ammunition and killing two policemen.
Fourteen defendants in the case will be detained for 15 days pending investigations, while five others have been declared innocent.
The rest of the defendants have been sentenced in absentia to prison terms ranging from five to 10 years.
Former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi and hundreds of his supporters have been sentenced to death since his ouster in 2013, which was prompted by mass protests against his rule. (Sources: Ahram Online, 15/09/2015)
