OSLO: THE SECOND DAY OF THE 6TH WORLD CONGRESS AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY
June 22, 2016: The 6th World Congress against the Death Penalty continued today with a focus on the evolution of the debate on capital punishment in Asia, opened by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka Mangala Samareweera. Following, a session dedicated to the death penalty in time of terrorism.
In the afternoon, the event was held on the 6th pro-moratorium resolution with the Minister of Justice of Mongolia Bayartsetseg Jigmiddash, Elizabeth Zamparutti (HOC) and Chiara Sangiorgio (Amnesty International), on strategies for the next vote.
The event was highly attended, with an intense and useful exchange of views especially on the text of the next resolution.
Other events included the death penalty in Belarus, Iran, and the death penalty for drugs. The afternoon sessions have instead focused on the death penalty against the mentally ill and minorities. Tomorrow, the final day.
