BANGLADESH: 3 TO DIE, 7 GET LIFE IN PRISON FOR KILLING KERANIGANJ BUSINESSMAN
May 20, 2018: A court awarded death penalty to three people and life imprisonment to seven others for killing a businessman for extortion in Keraniganj in 2006. The condemned convicts are Maruf Hossain, 24, Titu, 21, and Liton, 20, while the lifers are Amzad Hossain Liton, 21, Sabbir, 22, Abdul Goni, 22, Wasim Kasai, 25, Samrat, 30, Nantu, 20, Nabab, 31. Of them, Titu, Liton, Samrat and Nabab were present in the dock when the verdict was pronounced. According to the prosecution, the convicts shot Bachchu Miah to death at Jinjira of Keraniganj on June 18, 2006 over an extortion of Tk 20 lakh. Victim’s brother Matiur Rahman had filed a case against 11 people over the incident. Of the accused, ‘Dakat’ Shaheed was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in 2012.
