SAUDI ARABIA: ONE SENTENCED TO DEATH, SEVEN TO JAIL IN IRAN SPYING CASE
February 26, 2020: A Saudi citizen was sentenced to death on 24 February 2020, with seven others facing years in jail on charges of treason and espionage on behalf of Iran, state television reported on 25 February. The Saudi sentenced to death was accused of "betraying his country and offering intelligence to Iran", Al-Ekhbariya television said on Twitter. Seven others, who apparently acted as his accomplices, were handed a total of 58 in prison years for having "associated and cooperated with people working in the embassy of Iran", it added. While the identity of the defendants was not specified, and neither was the Iranian embassy they are accused of having liaised with, other reports suggest that the cell provided Iran with intelligence on diplomatic compounds within Saudi Arabia. According to Al Arabiya, the spies monitored at least two foreign embassies -- not specified in the report -- on Saudi soil and relayed the information, including the buildings' layout and security presence. They were also accused of compromising Saudi national security by providing Iran with information on its foreign affairs and economy. (Sources: Afp, 25/02/2020)
