BANGLADESH: 9 SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR KILLING MAN IN CTG
March 11, 2021: A Chattogram (Chittagong) court on 8 March 2021 sentenced nine people to death in a case filed over killing a man at Fatikchhari upazila 17 years ago. Fourth Additional District and Sessions Judge Begum Farzana Akhtar handed down the verdict after taking all the evidences and testimonies of 10 witnesses into account. Each convict was also fined Tk20,000, said court sources. The convicts are -- Leda Nasir, Babul (28), Shahin (27), Nurul Islam (32), Jobayer (23), Didar (22), Abu Bakar (26), Jangu (35) and Ismail, 24. "Among them, only Shahin is behind bars while the rest are absconding," said Public Prosecutor Md Nasir. According to the case statement, Nesar Ahmed, an expatriate, was slaughtered on 1 November 2003 by the convicts over a personnel feud in Fatikchhari. Later, they dumped the body at a field in the upazila. After that, the victim's wife filed a murder case with Fatikchhari Police Station on 2 November of the same year. After the investigation, police had pressed charges before a court on 14 May 2004 while another court framed charges against the convicts on 20 March 2007, reports our Chattogram correspondent.
