SOMALIA: MILITARY COURT SENTENCES AL-SHABAAB CONVICT TO DEATH
December 15, 2022: A military court in Mogadishu on 12 December 2022 sentenced a suspected al-Shabaab member to death amid the government stepped up operation against the group in south-central Somalia. According to a statement by the court, Mohamed Abdulle Nur militant is proven to have been part of an attack on Mogadishu’s Adan Abdulle International Airport on 23 March last year. Early last year, armed al-Shabaab fighters attacked an army base near the Somali capital’s international airport, killing at least five people, including two of the attackers. Al-Shabaab has claimed the responsibility for the attack, saying it was behind the attack on the camp near Mogadishu airport. It also claimed to have fired mortars into the camp, where African Union (AMISOM) peacekeeping troops, United Nations and other international organizations are based. The court ruling comes as Somali forces backed by local militias intensified operations against al-Shabaab fighters in southcentral regions. The allied forces liberated dozens of towns.
