IRAN - Riot at Karaj Penitentiary at least one prisoner killed
December 19, 2022: Following a riot at Karaj Penitentiary yesterday, at least one prisoner named Mohsen Mansouri was killed by a bullet to the head, and several others injured. 17 men who were sentenced to death for drug-related charges were also transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions. According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, prisoners in Wards 1, 3 and 4 rioted after a prisoner was transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for his execution on December 18. At least one prisoner, 31-year-old Mohsen Mansouri was killed in the course of the protest. Informed sources told Iran Human Rights: “Mohsen Mansouri was shot in the head with live ammunition from behind by the prison warden, Iraj Fatahi who was standing 2 metres away.” At least four prisoners named Mohsen Gholizadeh, Hassan Abdi, Shahriar Ganji and Farzad Ghobadi, were seriously injured and transferred to medical facilities outside the prison. Prisoners broke CCTV, set their blankets on fire, blocked entrances to the ward and chanted: "death to Khamenei", "death to the Islamic Republic" and "death to dictator." According to latest reports, at 17 prisoners on death row for drug-related charges were transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions on December 18 and 19. Their names are: Omid Fathzadeh; Samad Hashemi; Mostafa Nasiri; Masoud Sasani; Akbar Khalili; Mehdi Doostdari; Hasan Ganji; Milad Yari; Ehsan Basati; Maziar Soltanzadeh; Hadi Nazari; Reza Zaeri; Mehdi Kamranifar; Abolfazl Borghaninejad; Sabina Esmailzadeh; Ebrahim Ajali and Ali Teimouri. It should be noted that of the at least 42 people executed in Iranian prisons in December, 19 were on death row for drug-related charges. Riots have taken place in at least four prisons since the beginning of the nationwide protests in Iran. Several prisoners were killed after the crackdowns in Evin Prison, Rasht Central Prison (Lakan), Karaj Penitentiary and Ghaemshahr Prison in Mazandaran.
