GHANA: 123 PEOPLE ON DEATH ROW
May 16, 2011: the 2011 State of the World's Human Rights Report, which was launched by Amnesty International, revealed that a total of 123 people, including three women, were on death row and awaiting execution in Ghana, as at December 31, 2010.
17 people were sentenced to death by hanging for murder, but "no executions were carried out." The report also noted that access to legal aid was inadequate, a situation, it said, lead to some prisoners spending over ten years awaiting trial. It said the prisons were overcrowded and under-resourced." (Sources: AllAfrica.com, 16/05/2011)
