LEBANON: MILITARY COURT SENTENCES IN ABSENTIA ARMY OFFICER TO DEATH OVER COLLABORATING WITH ISRAEL
October 5, 2013: The military court sentenced in absentia a Lebanese army officer to death for collaborating with Israel and a Palestinian was sentenced to 10 years in prison over the same charges.
The court condemned Brigadier Ghassan al-Jidd, demanding the death penalty over spying for Israel.
While the Palestinian, Asaad al-Khatib was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
According to al-Mustaqbal newspaper published on Saturday (5 October), al-Khatib confessed to the charges.
More than 100 people have been arrested on suspicion of spying for the Israeli Mossad since April 2009, including members of the security forces and telecom employees.
Several have since been sentenced to death, including one found guilty of aiding Israel during its 2006 war with Hizbullah. (Sources: naharnet.com, 05/10/2013)
