HANDS OFF CAIN. ANNULMENT OF SENTENCE WELCOMED, RULING SHOWS TRUTH IN HOC’S DENOUNCEMENT
June 1, 2006: Hands Off Cain welcomed the Iranian Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the death sentence handed down to Nazanin and to order a retrial due to the emergence of new factors in the case.
In February 2006 Hands Off Cain had promoted an appeal directed at the highest representatives of the International Community and backed by Nobel Laureates and others to save Nazanin, sentenced to death in Iran on January 7 for having killed her attempted rapist in an act of self defence. She was only 17 at the time. On March 14, Iranian diplomats in Rome denied details relating to the case stating that “the girl in question is actually called Mahabad Fatehi, she was over 18 at the time of the crime and her claim of legitimate defence does not correspond to what happened,” because “she is a morally corrupt person who killed for financial gain… and however it may be legitimate defence must be proved”. If Iranian publications such as “Sharq” and “Hamshahri” now carry news regarding the Supreme Court’s annulment of the death penalty handed down to Nazanin, it is evident there was some element of truth in Hands Off Cain’s claim.
