NIGERIA. MAN SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR MURDER
June 5, 2006: an Asaba High Court in Nigeria, presided over by Justice Tessy Obiajulu Diai, sentenced 26-year-old trader Henry Ihiaeme to death by hanging for stabbing to death Endurance Odjegba during a scuffle over a bottle of beer on October 28, 2001.Ā
Prosecution witness Dennis Agbateyiniro recounted to the court how he and the victim had gone to Ihiaemeās house to settle a complaint made by a third man who claimed to have been harassed by the accused over the purchase of a bottle of beer.
The witness further stated that "at the compound of the accused both the accused person and the deceased got into a fight. The accused then ran into his room and came out with a kitchen knife", the witness and the deceased then ran for their lives with the accused in pursuit. "The deceased", he stated, "stumbled and fell while running while the accused set upon him with the kitchen knife stabbing him three times on the chest causing serious injuries which led to the death of the deceased."
