BANGLADESH: 8 TO DIE FOR RAMNA KILLING
June 23, 2014: A Dhaka court has sentenced to death eight accused including Huji chief Mufti Hannan in the sensational Ramna Batamul killing case.
Judge Ruhul Amin of the Dhakaâs Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judgeâs Court passed the order.
The court also sentenced six other accused to life term imprisonment for their involvement in the case.
The death awarded convicts are: Mufti Abdul Hannan Munshi, Arif Hasan Suman, Maulana Akbar Hossain alias Helaluddin, Maulana Mohammad Tajuddin (absconding), Hafez Jahangir Alam Badar (absconding), Maulana Abu Bakar alias Selim Hawlader (absconding), Mufti Shafiqur Rahman (Absconding) and Mufti Abdul Hye (absconding).
The court also fined the death row convicts Tk50,000 each.
During the traditional celebrations of the Bangla New Year, 1408 (April 14, 2001) at the Ramna Batamul, several blasts killed 10 people and injured around 50 others.
Two cases -- one for the killing and the other under the explosive substances act -- were filed with Ramna police station in connection with the incident. (Sources: dhakatribune.com, 23/06/2014)
