June 25, 2014: In a speedy, decisive judgment, the Mangaon court in Raigad district awarded the death sentence to a 24-year-old labourer for raping and murdering a 14-year-old schoolgirl in November 2012. The incident occurred at an isolated spot in Pali, about 135km from Mumbai.
Additional sessions court judge Pradeep Bharad awarded the death sentence to Viren Rajput, who was 22 when he committed the crime.
On October 17, 2012, Rajput spotted the girl walking back from her school in Pali to her village on an isolated road. He jumped her and then forced himself on her. He then strangulated the girl with her own dupatta, which was part of her school uniform. After that, he buried her there. Nearly 200 villagers launched a night-long hunt for the man.
