SOUTH CAROLINA (USA): MAN EXECUTED FOR POLICE MURDER
May 8, 2009: An Alabama man convicted of killing a police officer was executed in South Carolina.
Thomas Treshawn Ivey was put to death by lethal injection in the state's death chamber in Columbia. The 34-year-old made no final statement.
Ivey had been awaiting execution since 1995, when he was convicted of killing Tommy Harrison. Prosecutors said Ivey shot the 38-year-old Orangeburg police sergeant in 1993 after trying to pass a bad check.
Ivey also had been sentenced to death for killing a South Carolina businessman several days before he killed Harrison.
Ivey is the 42nd person executed in South Carolina since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976 and the 283rd in the state's history. (Sources: Ap, 08/05/2009)
