SOMALIA: AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL CALLS FOR URGENT ACTION AS PUNTLAND WOMAN FACES EXECUTION
May 13, 2009: Amnesty International said that Ifraah Ali Aden, 30, is in imminent danger of being executed in the Puntland region of Somalia for the murder of another woman. Both women were married to the same man.
Researcher Benedicte Goderiaux said "Amnesty is particularly worried because she is reportedly pregnant. Both international law and Islamic law forbid the execution of pregnant women.â
âThe second concern is that Ifraah was tried the day after the killing and would not have had time to prepare an adequate defence.â
Ifraah was sentenced to death on 27 April by the Court of First Instance in the city of Bossaso.
It is not clear whether she has the right to appeal to a higher court, as per Article 41(5) of the Transitional Constitution of the Puntland Regional Government. (Sources: amnesty.ca, 12/05/2009; VOA News, 13/05/2009)
