EGYPT: PAIR EXECUTED AMID QUESTIONS OVER MURDER CONVICTION
March 10, 2010: Egyptian man Atef Rohyum Abd El Al Rohyum was hanged in Cairo’s Isti'naf prison, and his female co-accused, Jihan Mohammed Ali, was executed in Giza for murdering Ali's husband in January 2004.
Ali claimed she killed her husband alone as he was beating her, and Atef only helped move the body. Atef was reportedly tortured and his family were not informed of his execution until they were asked to collect the body.
At an earlier stage, following his arrest, Atef Rohyum Abd El Al Rohyum is reported to have been interrogated without the presence of a lawyer and tortured and otherwise ill-treated.
Those who say they witnessed him being tortured and harshly treated were not called to give evidence at his trial. (Sources: Amnesty International, 12/03/2010)
