VIETNAM: MAN SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR KILLING 2 AT BEER CLUB
March 24, 2016: A court in the southern province of Kien Giang handed down a death sentence to a local man for killing two people, including a pregnant woman, at a beer club last year.
Do Thanh Son, 31, cried while saying his last words, asking for a life sentence instead so that he could see his two children.
He was also found guilty of illegally using guns, possessing drugs and having sex with a minor.
Prosecutors said Son and another man, Nguyen Trong Nghia, armed with guns and knives, went searching for Huynh Thanh Bao at the Lion Garden club in Phu Quoc on August 1. They reportedly tried to settle an old score.
Son fired several shots that killed Bao, 19, and Thai Thi Thanh Mai, 31, a pregnant woman who happened to be celebrating her birthday at the club. She did not know either of the men.
Helped by his accomplices, Son fled the scene and hid in a house with his 15-year-old girlfriend.
On August 4, when the police surrounded the house, he shot himself and the girl.
The duo suffered severe injuries but were saved. Police also found two bags of methamphetamine.
The court sentenced Nghia to 13 years in prison.
Six other accomplices receive jail terms of up to five years for aiding and abetting Son.
The teenage girl did not face criminal charges. (Sources: Thanh Nien News, 24/03/2016)
