29 March 2022 :

The Cabinet on 28 March 2022 approved the draft of 'Ansar Battalion Act, 2022' keeping death penalty as the maximum punishment for serious offences like attempt to revolt, participation or provocation in such conspiracy.
The Ansar Battalion is a paramilitary auxiliary force responsible for the preservation of internal security and law enforcement in Bangladesh.
The approval came at the regular cabinet meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair at her office, reports UNB.
"If anyone tries to revolt, instigates or participates in conspiracy, the member would face death penalty or life sentence or minimum five-year jail," said Cabinet Secretary Khandkar Anwarul Islam at a press briefing at Bangladesh Secretariat.
As per the draft law, there will be two separate courts - Summary Ansar Battalion Court and Special Ansar Battalion Court - to try two types of offences committed by any member, he said.
The summary court will try general crimes and misconduct, while the special court will try serious crimes, he said, adding that there will also be an Ansar Battalion Appeal Tribunal under the proposed law.
The cabinet secretary said the maximum punishment for general crimes would be three-year jail term.
According to the draft, a member of the Ansar Battalion can't be a member of any political or non-political organisation.

16 November 2022 :

A Gopalganj court on 13 November 2022 has given death sentence to four people in a drugs scase.
Gopalganj Additional Sessions Judge Md Abbas Uddin passed the verdict.
The convicts are Batul alias Rabiul, 46, Sujan Sheikh, 41, Md  Rafiq Mridha, 39, and Zakir Sikder, 45.
Batul and Sujan Sheikh were present in the court premises during the verdict.
The other death row convicts Rafiq Mridha and Zakir Sikder are still absconding.
However, one other accused, Sheikh Zirullah, 40, has been acquitted.
Court Bench Assistant Md Mahbubur Rahman said that on 10 July 2011, Sona Begum and Sheikh Zirullah were arrested by the The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) with 30 bottles of phensedyl. The DB police conducted a second phase of the operation, during which Batul escaped in a boat to Golabaria beel.
When the DB police reached Golabaria, Batul and his accomplices ran away and dumped sacks of phensedyl into the water.
DB police recovered a total of 497 bottles of phensedyl and weapons from there.
On that day, DB Police SI Md Shahadat Hossain filed a case at Gopalganj police station accusing Batul, Sona Begum, Zirullah, Sujan Sheikh, Md Rafiq Mridha, and Zakir Sikdar.
Some days after filing the case, Sona Begum died.
The investigating officer of the case, SI Md Moazzem Hossain, submitted a charge sheet against the five accused in the court on 6 August 2011.
After receiving the evidence, the judge sentenced the four accused to death.

03 April 2022 :

A court in Bangladesh on 31 March 2022 sentenced a woman caught with a 0.5 kg of heroin in Gaibandha in 2018 to death in a narcotics case.
The verdict in the case was announced by Gaibandha District and Sessions Judge Dilip Kumar Bhoumik, reports bdnews24.com.
The convict, 38-year-old Parvin Begum aka Shaila, hailed from the Bardhankuthi area of Gobindaganj Upazila and was present in court to hear the decision.
In addition to the death sentence, the court has also fined her Tk 100,000, said state lawyer Faruk Ahamed.
Four others – Bipul Mia, 40, Ramzan Ali, 45, Shaju Miah, 35, and Shohag Hassan – were acquitted in the case.
On 8 December 2018, some drug traffickers were taking a bus from the Hili Land Port in Dinajpur to Gobindaganj Upazila when it was stopped by police, said lawyer Faruk, citing the case documents. Some of the traffickers jumped out of the window and fled.
Police then searched Parvin Begum after she came off the bus and found a 500 g bag of heroin in her bag.
A case was filed over the incident at Gobindaganj Police Station under the Narcotics Control Act.

08 September 2022 :

A Khulna tribunal on 7 September 2022 sentenced five persons to death in addition to fining Tk20,000 to each for raping a teenage girl in Khalishpur of the district in 2011.
The death row convicts are Ali Akbar alias Ridoy, Mehedi Hasan alias Ibu, Sohel, Abdullah, and Mohon.
Khulna Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 Judge Abdus Salam Khan pronounced the judgment.
On 23 March 2011, convict Mohon abducted the girl from the Bihari Camp in Khalishpur and took her to Charer Haat.
Ali Akbar and some others raped the girl there, leaving her unconscious near the camp.
Later, a case was filed at Khalishpur police station by the mother of the victim.
On 20 June 2011, the investigation officer of the case sub-inspector (SI) Kazi Rezaul Karim submitted a charge sheet against the five.
Among the convicts, Sohel, Abdullah, and Mohon were tried in absentia.

07 September 2022 :

A Chattogram court on 17 August 2022 sentenced five Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militants to death in a case filed for bombings at two mosques inside Bangladesh Navy’s Issa Khan Base in Chattogram in 2015.
The order was passed by Chattogram Anti-Terrorism Tribunal Judge Abdul Halim.
The death row convicts are Abdul Mannan, Ramjan Ali, Bablu Rahman Roni, Abdul Gaffar and former Navy member M Sakhawat Hossain. Of them, Sakhawat is absconding.
The court also fined them Tk 50,000 each. 
Public Prosecutor Monoranjan Das confirmed the matter to Jago News. 
On 18 December 2015, 24 Muslim devotees were injured when a number of bombs exploded at the two mosques.
On 28 January 2020, the court framed charges against the accused in the case.

02 December 2022 :

A death-row convict was hanged on 30 November 2022 at Kashimpur Central Jail-2 in a case filed for the murder of freedom fighter Gias Uddin in Narayanganj. 
Confirming the matter to Jago News, Senior Jail Superintendent Md Amirul Islam said the hanging of Kamal alias Excel Kamal was carried out at 11:01 pm after all the legal proceedings.
Officials from different departments including the jail were present during this time. 
According to the jail source, the freedom fighter was murdered in 2004. Narayanganj District Sessions Judge Court sentenced Kamal to death in the case in 2006. Later, the High Court upheld the death sentence and Kamal filed an appeal petition with the Appellate Division and it was rejected.
Kamal filed a mercy petition to the President which was also rejected on November 1 this year.

01 December 2022 :

A condemned convicted was executed in Rajshahi Central jail on 30 November 2022 night, official sources said.
The death verdict of the convict Rakibur Rahman, son of Khalilur Rahman of Nimtala village under Godagari upazila of the district, was executed one minute past 10.00pm on 30 November.
His body was handed over to his family members after a post mortem examination in the night.
Rakibur Rahman was given the death sentence in a murder case by a trial tribunal in Rajshahi on 8 August 2004.
The case story, in brief, is that Rakibur slaughtered a woman named Khorsheda Khatun to death on 2 January 1999. Subsequently, father of the victim Abdul Jabbar had lodged a case with Godagari Police Station.

17 November 2022 :

A tribunal in Cumilla on 8 November 2022 sentenced two men to death for killing a 10-year-old girl after rape in Monohargonj upazila in 2018.
The death-row convicts are Bacchu Mia and Amir Hamza, residents of the upazila.
Cumilla Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Abdullah Al Mamun delivered the judgment.
The court also fined the convicts Tk 1 lakh each.
According to the case, the minor girl was raped and hacked to death by the convicts in the upazila on 5 March in 2018.
Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Cumilla Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.
A case was filed at Monohargonj police station in this regard.
On 12 February in 2019, a chargesheet against the convicts was submitted to the court.

27 October 2022 :

A court in Madaripur on 19 October 2022 sentenced three people to death and six others to life imprisonment for killing a trader at Sadar upazila in the district in 2003.
Madaripur Additional District and Sessions Judge Lailatul Ferdous handed down the verdict in the afternoon.
The condemned convicts are Mazharul Islam Manju, 50, Jasim Sheikh, 45, and Masim Sheikh, 48, residents of Shirkhara village in the upazila.
And the lifers are Hossain Hawlader, 60, Manjur Ali, 56, Saidur Hossain Hawlader, 52, Surja Matubbar, 55, Foez Sheik, 58, and Sujal Matubbar, 60.
The court also fined the convicts Tk 50,000 each.
Siddiqur Rahman, public prosecutor of the court, confirmed the matter.
According to the prosecution, trader Razzaque Hawlader, brother of Shirkhara UP chairman Mojibur Rahman Hawlader, was shot dead in a broad daylight by political rivals at Rajarhat Bazar on 19 October 2003, over a UP election.
A case was filed by the victim's wife Selina Khanam with Madaripur Sadar Police Station on 20 October accusing 20 people.
Police submitted a charge-sheet against 19 people to the court on 3 November 2005, after an investigation.

25 October 2022 :

A court in Bangladesh sentenced 10 defendants to death on October 24, 2022 in the case of the murders of three cattle traders among four people on the Alikadam-Thanchi route in the Bandarban hill district.
The accused are- Lojohon Tripura, 20, John Back Tripura, 22, Jasin Tripura, 25, Jibon Tripura, 24, George Tripura, 28, Sunny Tripura, 20, Salau Tripura, 20, Senendra Tripura, 27, Joseph Tripura, 25, and Shigram Tripura, 37.
Judge Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan of Bandarban's District and Session Court passed the order.
According to Bandarban District and Sessions Judge Court Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Md Iqbal Karim, on April 14, 2016, John Tripura called Abu Naim to Alikadam-Thanchi road.
The plaintiff in the case, Abul Hasem said that the accused informed his younger brother Abu Naim that they wanted to sell nine of their cows for Tk3 lakh. Being informed, Abu Bakkar, 28, Nurul Afsar, 29, and Sahabuddin, 29 went with him to buy the cows with the money at Thanchi-Alikadam road.
However, after arriving there, the three traders along with Hasem's brother Abu Naim were killed and their money taken.
“We are happy with the verdict,” Abul Hashem said.
According to court sources, on April 16, 2016, Abu Bakkar's brother Abul Hasem filed a murder case against the accused in Thanchi police station.
The defendants were given a sentence of death under section 302 of the Penal Code and six months in prison without the possibility of parole and a fine of Tk10,000.
The defendants are all missing.

20 October 2022 :

A court in Bangladesh on 18 October 2022 sentenced four people to death in the case of strangulation of a girl after rape in Narayanganj. Meanwhile, one person has been sentenced to life and one person has been acquitted.
Judge Nazmul Haque Shyamal of the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal gave the order.
Those sentenced to death are - Kamrul Hasan, Rabiul Islam, Shukkur Ali and Ali Akbar.
On the other hand, Dolly Begum was sentenced to life and Nasreen Begum was acquitted.
Among them, Rabiul Islam and Dolly Begum are absconding.
Public Prosecutor (PP) Rakib Uddin Ahmed said that the accused killed the girl after calling her to uncle's function. Later, a case was filed in this incident.
The court announced the verdict based on the testimony of 17 people.
Md. Saidul Islam Sumon, lawyer for the plaintiff, said that on 2 May 2005, the 6th grade student went to Lakshinagar village of Fupur village from her house in Char Rajapur village of Fatulla. The next day she went missing.
On 4 May, the police recovered her body from a field in Lakshinagar village.
The police first arrested and interrogated Dolly Begum. Then Dolly told the police that the girl was killed after being raped. At the same time she revealed the identity of the killers.

10 October 2022 :

A Dhaka court on 10 October 2022 issued the death penalty to seven persons, including a union parishad chairman, for killing a local Awami League leader in Mymensingh’s Gauripur upazila in 2020.
The death penalties were awarded to Riyad Uzzaman Riyad, chairman of Mailakanda union of Gauripur, Sakib Ahmed Reza, joint general secretary of Gauripur Municipality Chhatra Dal, Khairul Islam and Mozammel Haque, members of Mymensingh district (north) Swecchasebak Dal and Chhatra Dal activists Main Uddin, Shariful Islam and Ruhul Amin.
They were fined Tk 20,000 each.
Besides issuing death penalty, the court had also given life term to three others accused for their involvement in the crime.
The lifers are — Masud Parvez, aka Curzon, Shariat Ullah, aka Sumon, and Rasel Mia.
The court also fined the lifers Tk 20,000 each, non-realisation of which will languish them six months more in jail.
Judge Monir Kamal of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 handed down the verdict on 10 October.
On 17 October 2020, some unidentified assailants hacked Masudur Rahman Shuvro, general secretary of Gauripur upazila Swecchasebak League, to death in the upazila’s Pan Mohal area at about 10:00pm.
Abidur Rahman, the deceased’s younger brother, filed a murder case with Gauripur police station following the incident. On 27 April 2021, inspector of Detective Branch Shah Kamal Akanda submitted a charge sheet to the court accusing 19 people for the killing.
On 26 January 2022, the court framed charges against the accused and started the trial process.

04 October 2022 :

A court has sentenced a man to death and two others to life in prison for the murder of Mizan Sikdar Mishor, a worker at a dyeing factory at the Narayanganj Port.
District and Sessions Judge Munshi Mashiar Rahman delivered the verdict in the 2019 case on 3 October 2022, according to state lawyer Moniruzzaman Bulbul.
The death-row convict is 26-year-old Mithu.
Munna, 23, and Shaon, 19, were jailed for life. All three were in court to hear the verdict.
According to the case dossier, suspect Mithu owed Mizan Tk 500 and the two got into an argument over the money.
On 22 July 2019, Mithu and his accomplices stabbed Mizan to death.
The following day, Mizan’s brother Sayeed Sikdar filed a case at the Narayanganj Port Police Station over the incident. Police submitted charges against three suspects in the case.
In addition to the life sentences, Munna and Shaon were also fined Tk 100,000 by the court, state lawyer Moniruzzaman said. They will spend another year in jail if they fail to pay.

28 September 2022 :

A Sirajganj court on September 27, 2022 sentenced a man to death in a case filed for killing a two-year-old boy after an abduction.
Sirajganj District and Sessions Judge Fazle Khoda Md Nazir pronounced the verdict against convict Md Amir Chan (28) of Raipur in Shahzadpur upazila in the district, our Pabna correspondent reports quoting Public Prosecutor Abdur Rahman.
According to the case statement, the convict kidnapped the Abdus Salam of Raipur village on August 11, 2018 and demanded ransom from his family.
Amir killed the child and dumped the body at a neighbour's house. Police later recovered the body.The victim's mother Ambia Khatun filed the case against Amir at Shahzadpur Police Station. Police submitted a charge sheet accusing him after investigation.
The judge sentenced Amir Chan to death and also another 14 years in prison on separate charges of abduction and ransom. He was also fined Tk 50,000.
The death sentence will be executed after completion of the other conviction, the PP said adding that the convict was sent to jail from the court.

28 September 2022 :

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on September 13, 2022 sentenced Mohammad Khalilur Rahman from Durgapur Upazilla of Netrakona to death for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
The verdict was handed down by International Crimes Tribunal chairman Justice Md Shahinur Islam.
The first tribunal on September 11 set September 13 for pronouncing judgment in the case.
The tribunal on July 18, 2022, had kept the trial on CAV, curia advisory vault (a Latin legal term, meaning court awaits judgment) as both the prosecution and defence concluded their legal arguments in the case on that day.
There were initially five accused in the case, Mohammad Khalilur Rahman, Md Azizur Rahman, Ashok Ali, Md Shahnewaj and Ramjan Ali. Of the five, all but Khalilur, were arrested by the police. Ramjan died in police custody on September 30, 2016, while the case was on investigation stage.
The tribunal on March 12, 2018, framed five charges against the four accused.
But the three arrested accused died of old age in custody, leaving Khalilur as the sole accused in the case.
Khalilur, who was a member of Islami Chhatra Sangha in 1971, joined the locally formed Razakar Bahini. Subsequently, he became the commander of the local Al-Badr Bahini and committed heinous crimes against humanity in the locality.

26 September 2022 :

The High Court has affirmed the death sentences for four militants of the outlawed Islamist outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh, or JMB, for the murder of a Japanese national in Rangpur in 2015.
The panel of Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolon ruled on the death reference and convicts' appeal against their sentences on 21 September 2022.
But the court overturned the sentence for another convict, 34-year-old Ishaq Ali, who was also condemned to death by the trial court.
The four convicts facing capital punishment are Masud Rana, commander of the JMB's operations in Rangpur, Liton Mia, Shakhawat Hossain and Ahsan Ullah Ansari, who is absconding.
Reacting to the verdict, Deputy Attorney General Bashir Ahmed who represented the state at the hearing, said, “Five people were sentenced to death by the trial court. The death sentences for four of them have been upheld. One of the accused, Ishaq Ali, was acquitted.”
Referring to Ishaq's acquittal in the short order passed by the court, he said the state will look into the matter after receiving a copy of the full judgment.
In 2017, a Rangpur court handed down the death penalty to five people for actively participating in the killing of Kunio Hoshi, a sexagenarian Japanese man who had made Bangladesh his home for decades.
According to the case dossier, Kunio was shot dead by a group of masked JMB militants riding motorcycles as he was heading to his farm in a remote village of Rangpur.
The killing was similar to that of Italian aid worker Cesare Tavella in Dhaka a week earlier, and the attacks on foreigners in Bangladesh made international headlines at the time.

13 September 2022 :

Four men were sentenced to death on 23 August 2022 for the murder of a woman in Chandpur’s Matlab South Upazila in 2013.
The verdict was delivered by Chandpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Jannatul Ferdous Chowdhury.
The convicts were identified as Zia, Kamal, Abul Bashar and Mahmud.
A woman named Rahima was killed at Rasulpur village in the upazila on 20 May 2013, according to Sayedul Islam Babu, a public prosecutor at the court.
A case was filed over the death two days later.
That September, police completed their investigation and filed charges in the case.

04 August 2022 :

Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal on 28 July 2022 sentenced six members of the paramilitary force 'Razakar Bahini' to death for collaborating with the Pakistani Army for "crimes against humanity" during the 1971 Liberation War.
The three-member tribunal headed by Justice Mohammad Shahinur Islam delivered the verdict.
“They shall be hanged by neck until their death,” Islam pronounced, with five of the convicts faced the trial in person, while one convict was tried in absentia.
The six accused include Amjad Hossain Howladar, Sahar Ali Sardar, Atiyar Rahman, Motachim Billah, Kamal Uddin Goldar, and Nazrul Islam. Of them, Nazrul Islam is absconding.
The convicts were present on the dock as the judgment was delivered after which they were brought to Dhaka Central Jail.
“All the six convicts were charged on four counts of crimes against humanity,” prosecution lawyer Mokhlesur Rahman told reporters.
The tribunal officials said the six convicted were members of the “Razakar Bahini,” an East Pakistani paramilitary force affiliated to the Pakistan Army.
All the six hailed from southwestern Khulna district, and carried out atrocities such as mass killings, arsons and tortures, the tribunal said.
The prosecution lawyers said they were satisfied with the verdict while the defence counsels said they planned to challenge the verdict at the apex Appellate Division of the Supreme Court after consultations with their clients.

18 July 2022 :

A court in Feni on 14 July 2022 sentenced three people to death for raping a daughter in front of her mother at Sonagazi back in 2003.
The condemned convicts are Abul Kashem, Md Latu and Jahangir Alam.
Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Osman Haider pronounced the verdict on 14 July.
The court also acquitted another accused Mohammad Faruk as his  charges were not proved.
According to the case statement, Kashem, Latu, Jahangir and Faruk picked up mother and daughter at night on May 13, 2003 from Nababpur union. Then they raped the daughter at gunpoint tying her mother with a tree.
Later, the victim's mother filed a case with Sonagazi Police Station accusing the four rapists.
After examining the records and witnesses, the court handed down the verdict in presence of accused Md Faruk, assistant public prosecutor Farid Ahmed Hazari said.
Other accused of the case have remained absconding.

26 June 2022 :

A Kurigram District and Sessions Judge Court on 23 June 2022 sentenced six members of banned extremist outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh to death in a case filed over the murder of a freedom fighter.
Judge Abdul Mannan passed the order.
The death row convicts are — Rajib Gandhi, Riazul Islam alias Mehedi, Firoz Hasan alias Mokhles, Mahabyb Hasan Milon, and Abu Nasir alias Rubel and Golam Rabbani (absconding).
Among the seven accused in this case, Saddam Hossain died in a gunfight with the law enforcers while the case was under trial.
On 22 March 2016, some extremists attacked freedom fighter Hossain Ali, who converted to Christianity, when he was out on a morning walk in Kurigram town.
After stabbing him with sharp weapons, they exploded several cocktails and fled from the spot.
His son, Ruhul Amin Azad, the next day, filed two separate cases under the Explosive Substances Act.
On 5 November, that year, a charge sheet in these cases was submitted, and the court framed charges on 21 October 2018.

08 June 2022 :

A Narayanganj tribunal on 6 June 2022 sentenced six people to death for killing a couple in 2009.
The condemned convicts are Ariful Islam, 30, Jamal Hossain, 20, Sumon, 31, Md Sumon, Lokman and Shafiq.
Of them, Md Sumon, Lokman and Shafiq were tried in absentia.
According to the prosecution, Khadiza Begum, wife of Abdur Rahman of Ganganagar village in Rupganj upazila, was found dead in a water body on 11 August 2009.
During the investigation, police came to know that Rahman had hired the six men at Tk10,000 to kill his wife over family feud.
They took Khadiza to an abandoned place and violated her in turns. Later, they killed her and dumped the body in a water body.
The convicts killed Abdur Rahman too as he refused to give them the money and dumped the body there.
Rupganj thana police registered a murder case after getting a complaint from Khadiza’s father.
After examining the records and 12 witnesses, Narayanganj Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Nazmul Haque handed down the punishment.

23 May 2022 :

A court in Bangladesh has sentenced three people to death for murder, rape and other crimes against humanity in Moulvibazar’s Barlekha during the 1971 Liberation War, bdnews24 reported on 19 May 2022.
The three convicted war criminals are Abdul Mannan aka Monai, Abdul Aziz aka Habul and his brother Abdul Matin.
Abdul Matin is currently at large, while the other two were present in court to hear the verdict.
The verdict was delivered by a three-member International Crimes Tribunal bench led by Justice Md Shahinur Islam. The other members of the tribunal were Justice Md Abu Ahmed Jamadar and KM Hafizul Alam.
"The accused claimed they were 'freedom fighters' but the tribunal failed to prove their claim in court," prosecutor Sabina Yasmin Khan Munni said.
"The testimonies of 17 witnesses and other documents proved that they joined Razakar group and committed murder, rape, torture and other crimes against humanity in opposition to the Liberation War."
The Razakar group was a paramilitary force that supported the Pakistanis.
The investigation agency of the tribunal launched an investigation into the case against Mannan, Aziz and Matin in 2014 and it was completed in 2016.
The war crimes tribunal issued arrest warrants against three of them on Feb 29 that year.
Police apprehended Mannan and Aziz on Mar 1 that year and the International Crimes Tribunal sent them to jail a day after their arrest. The law enforcers could not manage to catch fugitive Matin. 

18 May 2022 :

A Chittagong court on 18 May 2022 sentenced three people to death for killing a two-year-old boy in 2020.
Judge Mohammad Jashim Uddin of Chittagong Additional Metropolitan Session Judge Court-3 handed down the punishment to the three after holding them guilty of the crime.
The three are Nazma Begum, Md Farid and Hasan, a security guard and son of Nazma. Of them, Hasan was tried in absentia.
According to the prosecution, the convicts plotted to kill Abdur Rahman Araf to frame the owner of the building where the child lived with his parents as a tenant.
The convicts lured Araf to the roof of the building while he was playing in the parking area of the building on 6 June 2020 and threw him into the water tank on the terrace, where he drowned.
Police subsequently arrested Nazma Hasan and Farid in connection with the murder. 
On 21 March 2021, cops filed a chargesheet against the three people. During the trial, Nazma admitted to her crime.

13 April 2022 :

A Dhaka court has sentenced four to death in the murder of Humayun Azad, the first known victim of a series of attacks by suspected militants in Bangladesh.
Fourth Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Al-Mamun delivered the verdict in the case around noon on 13 April 2022. He also fined each of the convicts Tk 50,000.
The death row convicts are Mohammad Mizanur Rahman Minhaz, Anwarul Alam, Nur Mohammad Shamim, and Salehin, all of whom are members of banned Islamist outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh, or JMB.
Mohammad Mizanur Rahman Minhaz and Anwarul Alam were in court to hear the verdict, while Nur Mohammad and Salehin are at large. Another suspect in the case, Hafez Mahmud, was killed in an alleged gunfight with police.  
The judge set 13 April for the verdict after both sides completed their arguments in the case on 27 March.
Azad, a prolific writer and professor of Bangla literature at Dhaka University who was well-known for his support of freethinking, came under attack on the campus after leaving the Bangla Academy during the Amar Ekushey Book Fair on 27 february 2004.
He was found dead at his apartment in Munich, Germany, on 12 August 2004. Kabir had initially filed an attempt to murder case, which was later turned into a murder case after further investigation.
The case documents reveal that Azad’s sudden demise in Munich was due to stress, anxiety and underlying injuries which resulted from the attack.
Issued by a Munich morgue, the autopsy report also said Azad’s treatment after the attack may not have been able to cure him properly and the fear and anxiety resulting from the attack, which is clinically known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), may have exacerbated his already worsening condition before he finally died. 
State counsel Bipul Debnath said Mizanur and Anwarul had given confessional statements to the court.

11 April 2022 :

A court in Bangladesh on 10 April 2022 handed down the death penalty to four people for the murder of a sweets shop assistant in Rajshahi's Tanore Upazila last year.
Rajshahi's Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Anup Kumar delivered the verdict in the presence of the convicts, according to Public Prosecutor Entajul Haque Babu, reports bdnews24.com.
The recipients of capital punishment are Bimal Singh, 50, his wife Anjali Rani, 45, their son Subodh Singh, 20, and Badol Mondol, 46.
The victim, Prakash Singh, went missing after leaving his home in Tanore's Chorkhair village on the afternoon of 28 March 2021, said Entajul, citing the case dossier.
Prakash worked at a sweets shop in Rajshahi city. He had spent the month prior to the incident at home due to a pandemic-induced lockdown.
According to the charge sheet, Prakash had learnt about Anjali's extramarital affair with Badol and in an act of reprisal, the suspects killed him.
Additionally, the convicts have each been handed a fine of Tk 10,000, said Entajul.

31 March 2022 :

Four persons on 30 March 2022 were sentenced to death in Bangladesh for killing writer and blogger Ananta Bijoy Das of Sylhet in May 2015.
Ananta Bijoy Das, whose writing was critical against Islam and other organised religions, was hacked to death by a group of masked men.
The condemned convicts are Abul Khaer Rashid Ahmed, Abul Hossain alias Abul Hussain, Harunur Rashid and Faisal Ahmed.
Sylhet Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal's judge Nurul Amin Biplob also acquitted Shafiur Rahman Farabi as allegations brought against him was not proven.
Earlier around 12:30pm, Farabi and Abul Khaer, now in jail custody, were produced before the court while the rest are on the run.
Ananta was killed on 12 May 2015 near his Subidbazar residence of Sylhet when he was on his way to work along with his sister.
Banned militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) claimed responsibility for the murder.
Ananta's brother Ratneswar Das filed a murder case accusing some unnamed persons with the Sylhet's Airport Police Station the next day, and the investigation was later handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
On 18 October 2016, Arman Ali, inspector of CID and investigation officer of the case, pressed the charge sheet but the court rejected it and ordered CID to reinvestigate the case and file a supplementary charge sheet, which was later filed on May 2017.
Another charge-sheeted accused, Mannan Yahya, the lone accused who confessed to the murder before the court, died on 2 November 2017 after he fell ill at Dhaka Central Jail.

24 March 2022 :

International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on 24 March 2022 sentenced Satkhira district Jamaat Amir and former MP Abdul Khaleq Mandal alias Jallad Khaleq and Khan Roknuzzaman, who is absconding, to death in a case of crimes against humanity.
A three-member judicial panel led by Justice Md Shahinur Islam, chairman of the tribunal, handed down the verdict.
Earlier, on 11 November 2021, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) issued an order setting aside any day for the verdict (CAV) to be pronounced.
Abdul Khaleq Mandal was produced before the court at the time the verdict was announced.
The main part of the 208-page long verdict was read out by the chairman of the tribunal, Justice Md. Shahinur Islam at 10:30am.
Prosecutors Mokhlesur Rahman Badal, Sultan Mahmud Simon and Rezia Sultana Chaman were present at that time.
Abdus Sobhan Tarafdar and Mujahidul Islam Shaheen stood for the accused Khaleq Mandal. While Gazi MH Tamim, being appointed by the state, stood for fugitive accused of the case, Khan Roknuzzaman.
The prosecution expressed satisfaction after the verdict as they had pleaded for the maximum punishment.
Defendant's lawyer Matiur Rahman Akand, on the other hand, said the verdict would be appealed in the high court.
There were four accused in this case. Among the total four accused of the case- Abdullah-hil Baki and Zahirul Islam Tekka Khan, died during the trial.
Charges were framed against the accused on 5 March 2018. A formal complaint was lodged in the case on 19 March 2017.
The accused have been charged with seven counts of crimes against humanity, including murder, rape, detention and torture. Although seven charges were brought against the accused, six charges were presented before the tribunal.

22 March 2022 :

The Narayanganj Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2 on 20 March 2022 sentenced four people to death and two others to life term rigorous imprisonment for killing a schoolboy in 2013.
Judge Begum Sabina Yeasmin of the court handed down the verdict.
The convicts who received death penalties are Siraj, 45, Ahmed Ali, 55, Nahid, 21, and Sentu Mia, 25.
Those who received life term imprisonment are Salma, 42, daughter of Sirajul Islam Siraj and Husna, 47, wife of Ahmed Ali.
The court also acquitted four other accused from the charges as allegations brought against them were not proved before the court.
According to the prosecution, Ahmed Ali, a Bangladeshi expatriate in Singapore and son of Ismail Hossain of Char Radhanagar village in Fatulla area, had longstanding enmity with his nephew Iqbal.
As a consequence of the enmity, Ahmed abducted Iqbal’s brother Emon Hossain, 13, and killed him on 13 June 2013.
Emon was a student of class VI at the time of his abduction.
Ahmed and his accomplices dumped the body after slashing it into nine pieces.
Later, police recovered the body of Emon after the victim’s family lodged a complaint with Narayanganj Sadar police station.
After investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against a total of ten people.

15 March 2022 :

The Naogaon Additional District and Sessions Judge Court on 14 March 2022 sentenced nine people to death and another to life term imprisonment for murdering three people in Badalgachhi upazila in the district in 2014.
Judge Hasan Mahmudul Islam of the court handed down the punishment.
The death sentence recipients are Md Saidul Islam, Aizul Haque, Jalal Hossain, Helal Hossain, Belal Hossain, Md Zayed, Abul Hossain, Md Mostafa and Md Sohag Ali.
The life term imprisonment recipient is Md Hashem Ali.
All the convicts are residents of Ujalpur village under Badalgacchi upazila.
According to the prosecution, the convicts killed Md Shahidul Islam Dulu, Md Amjad Hossain and Abdul Wadud over land dispute on 6 June 2014.
Later, Farhad Hossain, son of the deceased Md Shahidul Islam, filed a case with the local police station in this connection.
After examining records and hearing witnesses, the court delivered the verdict and acquitted ten others as allegations brought against them was not proved.

10 March 2022 :

Two convicted of the 2003 murder of Chattogram Railway official and freedom fighter Shafiuddin Ahmed, were executed at Cumilla Central Jail on 8 March 2022 night.
Senior jail superintendent Shahjahan Ahmed said that Shipon Hawladar, son of late Younus Hawladar, and Naimul Islam, son of late Edun Mia Sarkar, both residents of Chattogram, were hanged at 11:30pm.
Chattogram deputy commissioner Mohammad Kamrul Hasan, police superintendent Farooq Ahmed and civil surgeon Mir Mubarak Hossain were present during the execution.
All the mandatory legal procedures, including the post-mortem examinations of the bodies, were completed after the execution, Shahjahan said. ‘Later, the bodies were sent to their homes by the jail authorities.’
On 14 June 2003, Shafiuddin was shot dead at his home in North Ambagan Railway Quarters of Khulshi in Chattogram.
Based on a complaint from Mahmuda Begum, the wife of the victim, an FIR was filed by the police against 13 people.
On 25 November 2004, the Chittagong Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal sentenced Shipon and Naimul to death, and seven to life imprisonment.
The four other accused in the case were, however, acquitted due to lack of evidence.

01 March 2022 :

A Chattogram court on 14 February 2022 sentenced two people to death and six others to life in prison for the murder of Zillur Bhandari.
The verdict was announced by Chattogram Additional District and Sessions Judge Sheikh Samidul Islam.
The death row convicts are Shaheedul Islam Khokon and Ismail.
The six who received life sentences in prison are Abu, Kamal, Jashim, Tota Mia, Nasir and Sumon.
Only Shaheedul Islam Khokon is in custody. The remaining suspects are at large.
Zillur Rahman aka Zillur Bhandari was shot dead near the main gates of the Ranirhat Primary School in Chattogram’s Rangunia Upazila on 21 January 2015.
According to the case documents, Zillur’s brother Mohammad Ziauddin Bablu had sponsored convict Ismail’s brother Mohammad Jabbar to go to Qatar three months before the murder.
But visa complications led to arguments between Bablu and Jabbar and the sponsorship was cancelled, forcing Jabbar to return to Bangladesh.
On the night of 20 January 2015, Ismail saw Zillur at Ranirhat Bazar, asked him why his brother had been sent home and demanded the return of Tk 250,000 the family paid for the sponsorship.
This led to an argument. The following day, Zillur was attacked when he was alone and beaten. He was then shot in the leg.
Zillur was taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment and died that day.
The trial ended 12 December and the court had initially set 11 January for the verdict, but it was eventually delayed to 15 February.

21 February 2022 :

A Dhaka court on 16 February 2022 sentenced four people to death in a case filed over for the murder of a garment factory in Ashulia in July 2017.
The convicts are garment workers Sohel Rana, Farhad Hossain, Md Ashiqur Rahman, and Md Nazrul Islam.
Judge Ismat Jahan of Dhaka Second Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court handed down the sentence in presence of the convicts in the courtroom, according to court sources.
According to the case documents, Md Tanim, a machine operator went missing around 9:00 am on 22 July 2017. His body was found in the jungle near Khagan Village in Ashulia three days later.
Police, who had not identified him at the time, filed an unnatural death case over the incident.
On 10 Aug the same year, Tanim's wife Nurunnahar filed a general diary as her husband had been missing for some time.
Tanim's mother, unaware of her son's whereabouts, filed a case against Sohel for kidnapping and demanding Tk 40,000 as ransom.
The convicts had recorded Tanim's voice on a mobile phone and used the recording to demand money through bKash, said his mother Syeda Sultana.
The entire matter came to light during the investigation and Sohel gave a confessional statement during which he explained the motive for the crime and named his accomplices.
The suspects in the case were indicted on 5 November 2018.

06 February 2022 :

A Bangladeshi court on 31 January 2022 handed down the death penalty to two policemen and life term to seven other officers on charges of killing an ex-army major in a “pre-planned” attack in Cox’s Bazar, a sea-side resort town, in 2020.
“They shall be hanged by neck until they are dead,” a prosecution lawyer quoted Cox’s Bazar Sessions Judge Mohammad Ismail as pronouncing the sentence for murdering Major (retd) Sinha Mohammad Rashed.
Hundreds of people, including alleged police atrocity victims, waited for hours outside the heavily guarded Sessions Court Complex as the judge read out the 300-page verdict, eventually condemning inspector and coastal Teknaf Police Station In-Charge Prodip Kumar Dash and Inspector Liakat Ali to death.
According to the prosecution, Liakat Ali shot Rashed four times on the night of 31 July 2020 at a police check post in Cox’s Bazar Teknaf Marine Driveway after being instigated by Dash, who minutes later appeared at the scene and pressed his boot on Sinha’s neck who as per reports lay on the street for one and a quarter hours before dying.
Investigators and prosecutors alleged four bullets were shot within five minutes without any provocation as Rashed had come out of his car with a surrender gesture as was ordered to him.
Prosecutors said Ali responded in filthy language when Rashed begged for water, until Dash came to the scene and ordered the body to be sent to a hospital after his death was confirmed.
Rashed previously served in the elite Special Security Force (SSF) – meant to protect VVIPs including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He had taken voluntary retirement and was working as a travel documentary maker, staying in Cox’s Bazar for months with a television crew.
“We are happy as the two main killers were condemned to death,” a key-prosecution lawyer said.
He said before Rashed was finally shot down, efforts were made to assassinate his personal character as a drug addict and later ploys were made to lynch him as a dacoit instigating ordinary people.
The law said seven of the total 15 accused were acquitted but they are not completely innocent and “we will challenge their acquittal in the higher court”.
The court found Dash as the “mastermind” of the killing as Rashed questioned his atrocities on innocent people on the plea of particularly investigating drug peddling cases as 65 witnesses testified before the trial court.
The protestors outside, mostly residents of Cox’s Bazar and adjacent areas, distributed sweets after the verdict saying Dash used to blackmail them and killed many in the name of “crossfire” as they failed to bribe him as demanded or even after giving him money.
“We are happy as the two main culprits were given capital punishments … others who were acquitted too had some responsibilities and we hope they will be punished in the subsequent trial process in the appeal stage,” Rashed’s older sister Sharmin Shahria told newsmen at the scene.

26 January 2022 :

A Chattogram court on 20 January 2022 sentenced a man to death for killing a woman after rape at Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram in 2017.
The order was passed by Chattogram Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 judge Zamiul Haidar, said the court’s public prosecutor Nikhil Kumar Nath.
The convicted is Jashim Uddin Bappi, 50, a resident of Sitakunda area in Chattogram, the lawyer said.
The court also fined the murder convict Tk 1 lakh, he said.
The court acquitted two persons — Md Ayub and Md Sharif — in the case as their involvement was not proved, the lawyer added.
According to the case statement, Sharmin Akter, a resident of Sitakunda area, was killed after rape by the accused while she went to collect wood for cooking from a hill at Sitakunda on 29 March 2017.
A case was filed on 30 March 2017 in this regard and police arrested Jashim Uddin. Later he confessed to a Chattogram court to committing the crime.
The court passed the order after examining 17 prosecution witnesses. Jashim was present at the court during the verdict. Later he was sent to jail, according to the prosecutor.

25 January 2022 :

A Madaripur court on 24 January 2022 sentenced five people to death for killing a housewife at the Rajoir upazila of the district in 2002.
Lailatul Ferdous, judge of the Madaripur Additional and Session Judge's Court, passed the order in presence of four accused as another accused remains absconding since the murder, Public Prosecutor Siddiqur Rahman said.
"The court also fined the five convicts Tk 50,000 each," said the PP.
The convicts are Ashok Baidya, Noren Bairagai, Kalu Bishwas, Toruni Baidya and Bijoy Bepari. Of them, Bijoy Bepari is absconding since the murder.  
The PP told this correspondent that Radha Rani Baidya, wife of Gurupod Badiya of Amgram area of the upazila was abducted on 14 October 2002 over a land-related dispute. Later, the victim's son Bisnapad filed a kidnapping case against six people at the Rajoir Police Station.
Police recovered Radha's body from the Pakhulla Beel 11 days after her abduction.
"Police on 30 April 2003, submitted a charge sheet to a district against the six accused on charge of killing the woman and later arrested them from various areas," said PP Siddiqur. "Of the six accused, Gourango Baidya died during the trial proceedings. After examining 11 witnesses and documents, the court handed down the verdict today," he added.

22 November 2022 :

Two members of the banned militant group Ansar al-Islam, who were sentenced to death in Jagriti Publications publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan murder case, escaped from the lock-up of Dhaka court on November 20, 2022.
The escapees are Md Abu Siddique Sohel alias Sakib alias Sajid alias Shahab and Moinul Hasan Shamim alias Samir alias Sifat alias Imran, said Harun or-Rashid, Chief of Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
“The convicts sprayed something in the eyes of two policemen and escaped while they were being taken to the court. We’re searching for them in the nearby areas. This is the first time something like this has happened in the country,” said Harun.
Publisher Dipan, son of Prof Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq of Dhaka University, was hacked to death in his office on the second floor of Aziz Supermarket at Shahbagh in Dhaka on October 31, 2015.
A case was filed with Shahbagh Police Station the following day and later the case was transferred to Detective Branch.
Police on November 15, 2019, pressed charges against the eight Ansar al-Islam  men in the case.
On February 10, 2021, Dhaka Anti-Terrorism Tribunal sentenced eight militants to death.
The six other death-row convicts in the case are Md Abdus Sabur alias Abdus Samad alias Sujan alias Raju alias Saad, Khairul Islam alias Jamil alias Rifat alias Fahim alias Jisan, Mozammel Hossain alias Saimon alias Shahriar, Md Sheikh Abdullah alias Jubayer alias Jayed alias Javed, Syed Ziaul Hoque, a suspended major of Bangladesh Army who is known as Sagar alias Borobhai, and Akram Hossain alias Hasib alias Abir alias Adnan alias Abdullah.
Among the convicts, Sayed Ziaul Hoque and Akram Hossain have been absconding since the killing of Faisal Arefin Dipan.
